SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2010

September 1: Praise God for the way He has used CSW’s high-level political lobbying to influence decision-makers and raise religious freedom issues within the international community.

September 2: Thank You Lord for the many opportunities which CSW has had to tell the stories of the persecuted in the national and international media. Please pray for more opportunities to become available.

September 3: CSW has been able to visit so many persecuted Christians around the world in the past year. Praise God for using these visits to offer support and solidarity.

September 4: Lord, we thank You for working through CSW to make a difference in the lives of those facing persecution. Thank You for hearing our prayers and changing the lives of so many persecuted believers through our lobbying efforts.

September 5: Praise God for the support that has been provided for prisoners and their families. The actions of the UK Government and the European Union to monitor prisoner cases in response to our lobbying have been very encouraging.

September 6: We give thanks, O Lord, that CSW has been able to give victims of persecution the opportunity to share their testimonies with key officials in the UN, the European Union and the UK Government.

September 7: Praise God for the amazing answer to prayer that two Iranian Christians from a Muslim background, Maryam and Marzieh, were acquitted after being imprisoned for over a year. We pray that their testimony will encourage others facing persecution.

September 8: Human rights and religious freedom continue to be abused in Eritrea, with an estimated 20,000 prisoners of conscience, which includes about 3,000 Christians. Please pray for a spiritual awakening in Eritrea through Your Holy Spirit.

September 9: Dear God, thank You for Your faithfulness. Thank You for sustaining journalist, Tedros Abraham, through much suffering at the hands of the brutal Eritrean Regime, and that he was able to speak out at the UN and voice the truth.

September 10: In a United Nations hearing in December 2009, statements from every continent expressed concern over human rights violations taking place in Eritrea. O God, we thank You for the breakthrough regarding Eritrea which we have seen recently.

September 11: Please pray that the international community would not only recognize, but also take action to rectify, the appalling abuse of human rights in Eritrea. Praise God for the recent breakthrough when Eritrea was reviewed by the UN.

September 12: We pray that the international community will follow through on their undertaking to monitor improvements in Eritrea’s human rights record. Please pray that God would protect Christians from continuing waves of arrests.

September 13: Almighty God, we pray for Eritrean refugees in other countries – that You would keep them safe from harm. Praise God for the committed network of believers who pray for the persecuted Church, offering support and solidarity through prayer.

September 14: Please pray that God would comfort and sustain all those facing imprisonment and mistreatment. Dear Lord we pray that Eritrean Christians would remain united and be able to fellowship in safety.

September 15: We pray for the Christians who have been forcefully drafted into the army. Embolden their faith to grow strong and to be a good influence. Please pray also for those who are in hiding in Eritrea; that God would keep them safe from those in authority who seek to harm them.

September 16: O Lord, we pray for Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers in Libya, where the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has been forced to close. Please bring an end to the forced return of refugees by Libya, Israel, Sudan and Egypt. Dear God, please put compassion into the hearts of those deciding these policies.

September 17: Central and Northern Nigeria have seen horrific violence over the past few months. Hundreds have been killed, with countless churches, homes and businesses destroyed. CSW has lobbied the media to counter the misreporting and ensure that the truth is reported. Please pray that the truth will be heard in the media.

September 18: Lord, please lay Your hand upon the situations of violence in Northern and Central Nigeria. We ask that You would bring Your peace and power to restore families and lives, and enable forgiveness in Jesus’ name.

September 19: Dear God, we pray for the situation in Kano State, Nigeria. We lift up the congregations of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), and the Baptist Church whose buildings were recently destroyed. Please protect the ECWA pastor, who is in hiding following death threats.

September 20: Please pray for justice and deliverance for the people of Riyom, Nigeria. They are unable to farm because Fulani herdsmen have taken over part of their land and regularly attack them, often assisted by armed forces. Pray also for the people of Sanga village in Bauchi in Nigeria, who are mourning the murders of their pastor and his wife.

September 21: Praise God that there have been many opportunities this year, where the truth of the violence in Nigeria has been spoken out in the international media. We pray that the truth will continue to be heard, and that the violence will stop.

September 22: Almighty God, we pray for unity and direction for Christians in Plateau State, Nigeria. May their faith override all other affiliations. We pray for good relationships to be established between the churches in North and South Nigeria.

Dear God, please heal the emotional and physical wounds, and provide for those who are left without breadwinners, or who can no longer work due to disability.

September 25: Thank You Lord for the thousands of CSW supporters who send cards to the victims of persecution and their families, bringing hope and encouragement.

September 26: Praise God for the opportunities He gives to CSW to present at hearings and meetings within the international community, such as the recent European Parliament hearing on North Korea. Please pray that God would use such opportunities for His will to be done.

September 27: Please remember in prayer the millions of people living under brutal oppression around the world, especially those being held in prison camps. We pray that Your Holy Spirit would comfort and strengthen them in their suffering.

September 28: Loving God, thank You for sending Your Son to show Your love and light to the world. Thank You that Jesus overcame the darkness. We pray that You would shine Your light in North Korea and that Your truth would pierce the darkness.

September 29: Please pray for the 200,000 people held in prison camps in North Korea, many of whom are there without charge or trial, and often in over-crowded cells with pitiful food rations. Dear God, please protect, strengthen and provide for them. May they know Your mercy and grace amidst their trials.

September 30: We pray for the guards working in the prison camps, that You, O Lord, would change their hearts to show mercy to those imprisoned there. Please pray for Christians who have been taken away to camps to suffer brutal treatment because of their faith. Dear God, please watch over them and give them strength.

October 2: Almighty God, we ask that You would protect the North Korean refugees in China. Shield them from being caught and sent back to North Korea to face punishment, even execution, for fleeing.

October 3: We praise You Lord that You are a just and righteous God. Thank You for CSW’s speech at the recent hearing on North Korea in the European Parliament, and the support of those attending. May it continue to bear fruit and prompt action in North Korea.

October 4: We pray for Christians in North Korea who are unable to worship together, many of them keeping their faith a secret. Loving God, we ask that You would draw alongside them and give them Your strength and joy.

October 5: Please pray for the coalition of NGO’s (Non-Governmental Organizations) in the UK, of which CSW is a member, that their campaigning and lobbying for the people of North Korea would be effective.

October 6: We pray for CSW’s advocacy for North Korea – that God would use our campaigning to bring religious freedom to North Korea.

October 7: Cuban Pastor Omar Gude Pérez was detained in May 2008, and sentenced to six years in prison in July 2009 on fabricated charges. CSW’s lobbying has brought his case to the attention of the UK Government and the European Union. Please pray that the EU officials and the British Embassy in Cuba, who are officially monitoring his case now, would be able to secure his freedom.

October 8: Dear Lord, please bring an end to the persecution of Your Church in Cuba. We ask that You would enable Christians there to worship and speak about You in full freedom without fear of persecution.

October 10: O Lord, please comfort Pastor Gude Pérez’ wife, Kenia, and their family - as they cope without a husband and father. We pray that the family will have all their needs met, and that they will find joy and safety. Thank You Lord, that the government has withdrawn the eviction threat.

October 11: Praise God for the effectiveness of CSW’s advocacy for Pastor Gude Pérez. Please pray for wisdom and more opportunities to raise his case in the international community. “I know that there are many people praying for us, we thank them so much because those prayers arrive before the throne and they are answered...” Kenia Gude Pérez

October 12: Praise God that the Cuban authorities were confronted with the injustice regarding Pastor Gude Pérez and were concerned by the large amount of letters arriving for his family. October 13: Thank You God, that the European Union is monitoring Pastor Gude Pérez’s case. We pray that international pressure will help bring about his freedom.

October 14: Please pray for the relationships between churches in Cuba. We ask that You would strengthen the churches to work together for Your glory. We pray that they would stand in unity and support each other.

October 17: Pastor William Reyes disappeared in Colombia in September 2008 and has not been heard from since. His wife, Idia Miranda, and their children have been threatened on several occasions and forced to leave their family home. The European Union officials in Bogota are aware of his case due to CSW’s lobbying efforts and they are monitoring his case. Please pray that Pastor Reyes will be found soon and that his family will be safe.

October 18: We pray for Pastor William Reyes to know the presence of God with him and be strengthened. We pray for his wife, Idia Miranda, and their children. Thank You Lord for sustaining them, and for Idia’s faithfulness as she places her hope in God.

October 19: Dear Lord, we ask that You would continue to encourage and provide for Pastor William Reyes’ family. “Even though we couldn’t always understand what [the letters] said, we would pray for each person who sent us a card or letter by name. Even now sometimes, I will open the box where I keep all the letters and take one out and pray for that person.” Pastor Idia Miranda Reyes

October 20: Please commit into God’s hands the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the National Liberation Army (ELN), paramilitary groups and government forces who are fighting in Colombia. O Lord, please change their hearts and minds to pursue justice and peace instead of evil and power.

October 21: Almighty God, we ask that You would comfort those who have lost loved ones to the violence in Colombia. We pray for the congregations who have lost pastors because they spoke up for Your truth, peace and justice, or refused to close their churches.

October 22: Please pray for Christians in Colombia who are living out their faith with the knowledge that it may cost them their life. We pray that they would keep their eyes fixed on Jesus and be strengthened by Him in all they do.

October 31: Gracious Lord, we thank You for the courage of our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering persecution in China. Lord, we ask that You would continue to enable them by Your Holy Spirit, to persevere in the midst of all the danger and opposition that they face.
