Remember their names: Father Luke Jomo, Sudan

3 Jul 2026

Father Luka Jomo was a Roman Catholic priest who served in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur. As the war intensified, he remained in his parish serving all those in need. He cared deeply for the most vulnerable, the elderly and children.

In June 2025, Father Luka was critically wounded in an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This was not a targeted assassination, but the result of the RSF’s intense bombing of civilian sites, including places of worship.

Father Luka stood with the city of El Fasher during its long siege and was much loved by the community there. We remember him, and countless others who have lost their lives during Sudan’s conflict.

Attacks on places of worship

The RSF has repeatedly attacked places of worship, targeted churches and pressured Christian communities to convert to Islam. They have also attacked mosques; in El Fasher over 80 people died when the RSF attacked a dawn prayer service in September 2025.

The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) have also indiscriminately targeted places of worship during the conflict with aerial bombardment.

Facts and stats

The siege of El Fasher lasted 2 years, 6 months and 13 days. The RSF captured the city on 26 October 2025 and targeted the civilian population in a manner that UN experts concluded had ‘the hallmarks of genocide’.
